Il Palazzo dei Normanni, o Palazzo Reale, è la reggia più antica d'Europa. Sorge sul punto più alto dell'antica Palermo, occupando il sito di una fortezza punica e di un castello arabo. Dai Normanni agli Spagnoli, ogni sovrano ha lasciato il segno in questo complesso monumentale che oggi ospita il Parlamento della Regione Siciliana e alcuni dei tesori artistici più preziosi del Mediterraneo.
La sua anima è la Cappella Palatina: costruita da Ruggero II nel XII secolo, è uno scrigno di mosaici bizantini d'oro che raffigurano Cristo Pantocratore, scene bibliche e motivi ornamentali. Le navate, il soffitto a muqarnas arabo e gli affreschi medievali creano un'atmosfera surreale. Il Palazzo è anche sede del Museo etnografico siciliano Giuseppe Pitrè e offre itinerari nelle stanze reali, nei giardini pensili e nelle torri panoramiche.

The Palazzo dei Normanni, or Royal Palace, is the oldest royal palace in Europe. It stands on the highest point of ancient Palermo, occupying the site of a Punic fortress and an Arab castle. From the Normans to the Spanish, every sovereign left their mark on this monumental complex, which today houses the Parliament of the Sicilian Region and some of the most precious artistic treasures of the Mediterranean.
Its soul is the Palatine Chapel: built by Roger II in the 12th century, it is a casket of golden Byzantine mosaics depicting Christ Pantocrator, biblical scenes and ornamental motifs. The naves, the Arab muqarnas ceiling and the medieval frescoes create a surreal atmosphere. The Palace is also home to the Giuseppe Pitrè Sicilian ethnographic museum and offers itineraries through the royal rooms, hanging gardens and panoramic towers.
